Romano discussed Liverpool’s pursuit of player while speaking on his Here We Go Podcast.
Before confirming the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai, it was widely believe that the next midfielder into Anfield was going to be Khephren Thuram. Liverpool were linked to the son of former France legend Lilian Thuram for the majority of time after the season ended. However, reports from France seemed to indicate that pursuit is now over.
Now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed this to be the case. Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano suggests that price was the factor in Liverpool deciding against bringing the player in.
“At the moment Khephren Thuram situation is cold because he’s considered too expensive,” Romano said.
“Not just with Nice but also on the salary side. So, at the moment it’s a complicated one but the player has always been appreciated.”
So it seems that talks were undertaken, but the club decided that his salary and transfer fee were not at a level that they were comfortable with. Maybe the club and players agent assumed that Liverpool were willing to throw the kitchen sink at his signing, something that many European sides believe to be the case because of the vast amounts of money in England, and The Reds just weren’t feeling it was value for money.
With Romano stating the player has always been appreciated, maybe Liverpool are playing a waiting game to see if the demands will be decreased as the clock on the transfer window ticks down. Either way, it seems that the pursuit of Thuram will not be something that we’ll be hearing much about any time soon.
