The 49ers have added a former Super Bowl champion to their defense
Sebastian Joseph-Day, a defensive tackle with the Los Angeles Chargers, was released on Friday. Just a few days later, the veteran was signed by the San Francisco 49ers.
According to NFL Network’s Jason McCourty, the 49ers came to terms with Joseph-Day on Tuesday. The 5-year veteran is said to be signing a one-year contract.
The Niners reacted fast after their defense surrendered a season-low 33 points to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night.
While the 49ers’ defensive line heals, Joseph-Day will most likely be expected to fill in.
The 49ers’ offensive line has been plagued by injuries recently. Due to a hamstring injury, tackle Javon Hargrave missed the 49ers’ Week 15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Due to ongoing foot and knee injuries, defensive end Arik Armstead has been out for the previous three weeks.
Day, a former Chargers captain, won a Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021 before switching teams in Los Angeles.
So far, the Rutgers alum’s 2023 campaign has been a letdown. With 31 combined tackles in 14 games this season, Joseph-Day is on track for a career low. In addition, the 28-year-old has 3.0 sacks and 11 quarterback hits.
