Borussia Dortmund icon Marco Reus has decided to end his five year spell as club captain and hand in the armband ahead of the new Bundesliga season.

Despite the fact that it happened over a month ago, we wouldn’t be surprised if some Dortmund players and fans still wake up in the night from nightmares about the final day of last season.

It looked for all the world that the team were about to end a decade of Bayern Munich domination in the top tier, going into the final day of the campaign ahead of their rivals.

However disaster struck and Jamal Musiala struck a late winner to earn Bayern their 11th title in-a-row and leaving their rivals distraught.

One of those players who much have been particularly down would have been team captain Reus who has been at the club since 2012, joining just after their most recent title success..

Now the Germany international has decided that he will play next season without the captaincy, as you can see in his statement in the video below.

Speaking on the club’s s social media page the 34-year-old said: “Hello BVB fans, It is very important for me to tell you something personally.

ADVERT
“I had a lot to think about during my vacation, and I have decided to pass on the captain’s armband.

“I informed Edin Terzić and Sebastian Kehl about this yesterday. I was allowed to wear this armband for five years with pride and honour.

“Thank you for your support over the years. I wish Sebastian and Edin that they find a good successor. I am sure they will succeed.”

Reus was given the armband initially by Lucien Favre at the beginning of the 2018/19 campaign and has kept it ever since.

In April he signed a one year extension to his contract that will mean it will expire next summer, and that could be the end of his time at Signal Iduna Park.

As it seems to be every summer at Dortmund, it’s another huge transfer window for them after they lost Jude Bellingham to a record breaking fee.

Edin Terzic has already begun rebuilding his side by bringing in Felix Nmecha from Wolfsburg and Ramy Bensebaini from Borussia Monchengladbach.

The real rebuild may have to be sorting his current players out because that final day defeat in the title race could play on their minds for some time yet.

Marco Reus has been stretchered off during Borussia Dortmund’s clash with Schalke after suffering an injury – just two months before the World Cup.

The Germany international’s injury record is wretched and he’s missed three major international tournaments in his career.

He’s not featured for the national team since 2021, but seven goal contributions in nine games so far this season could’ve seen him sneak into Hansi Flick’s squad for this winter’s competition in Qatar.

That dream looks to have gone up in smoke during Saturday’s ‘Revierderby’ however, as Reus went down under a challenge from a Schalke defender in the 28th minute.

Medical personnel immediately rushed over and the Dortmund winger was visibly emotional while lay on the Signal Iduna Park turf. He was then carried off the pitch after a stoppage to play.

At 33-years-old, this winter is likely Reus’ last chance to play for Germany on the grandest stage of all.

Supporters are distraught at the news and they’re praying the injury isn’t serious.

ADVERT
One person said: “Injuries have robbed us of what could’ve been an all-time great.”

Another added: “You cannot tell me this man isn’t cursed. F**k man even as a neutral this is heartbreaking.”

A third put: “I don’t even care about the result anymore, this is so sad.”

While someone tweeted: “He’s had such a fantastic season as well.”

Reus discussed his battle with injuries in an interview with the Bundesliga’s official website in 2017, explaining he he tries to keep a positive mindset.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach man said: “I’ve experienced a lot, and had to endure a lot of setbacks. That’s part of life. Nevertheless, I always try to give my all every season, be healthy and recuperate.

“The older you get, the more responsibility you have to look after yourself. You get to know your body better all the time. I need that in my situation in order to play well.

“I can only perform to the level I expect of myself if I stay fit for a number of months or even one-two years. In general, I think positively. Even when I’m injured, I never say: ‘damn, why me?'”

Marco Reus will miss this winter’s World Cup in Qatar, with his latest injury being another heartbreaking setback in what has been an incredibly unlucky international career.

The 33-year-old, who has made just 48 appearances for Die Nationalmannschaft since 2011, picked up an ankle injury in Borussia Dortmund’s league clash against Schalke on September 17.

Then, to the surprise of many, Reus returned to action a month later but he appeared to aggravate the injury during Dortmund 2-0 defeat to Union Berlin.

As a result, he will miss a World Cup that could have potentially been his last.

Reus hasn’t had the best luck when it comes to injuries at major tournaments.

Back in 2014, he missed the World Cup – a tournament that Germany went on to win – with an ankle injury suffered in their 6-1 win over Armenia.

Two years later and Reus, who scored 20 goals that season as Dortmund finished second in the Bundesliga, was left out of Germany’s squad for Euro 2016 because of injury concerns, according to the head coach Joachim Low.

ADVERT
He would finally go on to play at a World Cup in the summer of 2018, but a shock defeat to South Korea meant Low’s side were knocked out at the group stages.

And now, Reus will miss this winter’s tournament in Qatar. According to Sky Sports, manager Hansi Flick had hoped for a timely recovery from his ankle injury but time wasn’t on their side.

To add further salt into the wounds, it’s thought the experienced forward would have played an important role in Flick’s World Cup plans.

ADVERT
Reus was called up by Flick for June’s Nations League games against Italy, England and Hungary and looked on course to feature this winter.

He has scored three goals in 12 appearances for Dortmund this season.

It may even top the last-gasp equaliser he scored to draw level with Bayern earlier this season, but whatever the case, he’s certainly begun to show his true qualities this season so far.

There’s no surprise that the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Liverpool are being linked with a move for the young star.

He also has six goals in five games for Germany’s U21 side, but is yet to receive his first senior cap.

Moukoko has broken a whole host of records already due to his age, such as being the youngest player in Champions League history at the age of 16 years and 18 days.

He did the same in the Bundesliga as well just a day after turning 16, and he now holds those two incredible records that will take some beating.

He stood out as a youth player with an incredible Moukoko scored 141 goals in just 88 games for Dortmund’s U17 and U19 sides
