Why Manchester United have left Dean Henderson, Donny van de Beek and Anthony

Dean Henderson and Anthony Martial will not be participating for Manchester United in the opening preseason game of the summer as they are still recovering from muscle strains.

Donny van de Beek, a Dutch midfielder who has been sidelined since January with a knee injury, has also been left behind at Carrington by Erik ten Hag, who has moved on. Van de Beek is pursuing a personal training regimen in an effort to regain his fitness.

Van de Beek has been participating in full training all this week, but he wasn’t selected for the 26-person traveling team for the Wednesday Friendlies match against Leeds in Oslo.

Henderson has been absent since January with a thigh injury and although he’s been back at Carrington for pre-season training, he’s not yet in full training. Martial missed the FA Cup final with a hamstring injury and while he was also back at Carrington last week, he hasn’t been spotted doing any training with the ball as he works his way back to fitness.

Martial, Henderson, and Van de Beek could all potentially depart the team this summer. Henderson is expected to go to the City Ground if United successfully acquires Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is coveted by Nottingham Forest.

While Martial’s fitness record continues to be questioned, Van de Beek, who has started just six Premier League games in the past three years, wants to play first-team football.

After recovering from a foot ailment, Lisandro Martinez was able to go with the team to Norway, and Mason Mount will make his club debut.
