Liverpool’s Andrea Dossena has admitted he regrets what he did after joining the club.In July 2008, Liverpool paid £7 million for the Italian left-back to replace the departing John Arne Rees, but he never lived up to expectations at Anfield.
After impressing for Udinese in Serie A and earning a cap for Italy, his time in England saw his career almost take off.Dossena spent just 18 months at Liverpool before moving to Napoli under manager Rafael Benítez.
Looking back on his time on Merseyside, Dossena admitted he never really settled into life in England, despite scoring two famous goals against Real Madrid and Manchester United in the space of a week. “At least in my case, that was my problem. I came from a culture where there was a lot of work every week, and at Liverpool we played every three days and never trained. I had to train on my own time to be 100% when I was drafted.
“I spoke to Benitez and he wasn’t very fit. It wasn’t his fault but I realized I had to work on myself. But I didn’t do that because I had no experience. my mistake!Dossena admits he regrets how his time at Liverpool ended, but says he has grown from the experience.
He continued: “I’m sorry I couldn’t do my best because of my lack of experience. “But I don’t regret joining the club because Liverpool helped me develop as a person, as a footballer then and as a coach today.”
The defender returned to England and played briefly for Sunderland and Leyton Orient. He is currently the manager of Pro Vercelli, a Serie C team chasing promotion this season.
