Kimi Räikkönen has always been intensely private about his personal life, but his first marriage to Jenni Dahlman has occasionally resurfaced because of comments he made years after their separation.
Kimi and Jenni met in 2001, became engaged in 2002 and married in 2004. Their separation was announced in early 2013, while their divorce was formally finalized in 2014. At the time, Kimi’s representative described the couple as being “in different directions,” without providing further details.

Years later, Kimi offered a more personal reflection in Kari Hotakainen’s biography Unknown Kimi Räikkönen. He described that period of his life as chaotic and acknowledged that the relationship involved a lot of partying, lying and fear of what might appear in the press. He also said he had not imagined having children in that relationship because, in his view, there was not a sufficient foundation for it.
Then came Minttu.
Kimi met Minttu Virtanen in 2013, and their relationship quickly became serious. Minttu later recalled that she initially had doubts because of Kimi’s public reputation and said that building trust between them took time.
Kimi himself said that when his relationship with Minttu became serious, he wanted to change his approach to relationships. In comments reported from the biography, he said he did not want to repeat the dishonesty and anxiety he had experienced previously.
That difference is perhaps what makes the two chapters of his life so interesting.
With Minttu, Kimi eventually built a family. Their first child, Robin, was born in 2015, they married in 2016, and they later welcomed two daughters.
But it is important not to reduce the end of Kimi and Jenni’s marriage to one single publicly confirmed reason. The contemporary announcement was deliberately brief, and Kimi has generally kept that part of his life private.
What he has spoken about more openly is the change he wanted to make in himself.
And that is where the story becomes particularly intriguing: was the difference really about the person he was with—or about the person Kimi himself had become by the time he met Minttu?
