Former Los Angeles Raiders quarterback Jack Squirek has died.The Raiders released a statement Saturday night announcing the Squirek news. The team referenced Squirek’s famous play in the Raiders’ 38-9 victory over Washington in Super Bowl XVIII.
Squirek caught a pass from quarterback Joe Theismann deep in Washington territory and returned it to give the Raiders a 21-3 halftime lead. “The Raiders family is saddened by the passing of Jack Squirek, who passed away on Friday,” the statement read.
“Squirek played for the Raiders for four years and was a central figure in one of the greatest football games of all time. … “Rider Nation’s thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the Squirek family at this time.”The cause of death was not disclosed.Squirrel was drafted by the Raiders in the second round in 1982 out of Illinois.
He played four seasons in Los Angeles and spent one year with the Miami Dolphins in 1986.Squirek played in 55 games in his NFL career. He recorded three sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries.
