49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is talking about how he can play football better than ever entering Sunday’s Week 15 game against the Arizona Cardinals. SANTA CLARA – Normally, an NFL quarterback wouldn’t regret the 72-yard burst that opened the game, but that’s not the case for Brock Purdy.

49ersand#039 in the opening game; In a Week 14 win over the Seattle Seahawks, Purdy took a snap at the 25-yard line and gave the ball to star quarterback Christian McCaffrey, who ran from the left side of the formation near the right to the 3-yard line.

sideline Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk made key blocks on the play, allowing his teammates to gain a few more yards, but Purdy let off the gas as he took off at full speed down the right sideline.

Had the quarterback kept up his speed, Purdy believes the play could have resulted in a touchdown. “I saw him do his surgery early,” Purdy said. –

I saw some guys downfield and BA running. I said, “Okay, I’m trying to get down.” And when Christian cuts, hopefully I can get in front of him and block him. “Christian started pulling back and I didn’t know if I was going to make it there.

And then he did the surgery and I was like, ‘Damn, I should have done that.’ I should have kept going.” McCaffrey doesn’t blame his quarterback at all, thinking he should have gotten into the end zone himself regardless.

The coach was very clear that he wanted his quarterback to stay healthy by not blocking defenders. “Hopefully not,” McCaffrey said of the possibility of Purdy helping block plays. “Hopefully he stays out of the way. He probably thought I hit the goal I should have and wanted to celebrate.”

Instead, on the next play, running back J.P. Mason replaced McCaffrey and was able to run the ball three yards to put the first points on the board.

McCaffrey wasn’t surprised that the first player to help him off the field was his quarterback. “He’s had a long time,” McCaffrey said with a smile.

“I should have won a long time ago, but it was nice to see.”
