Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is having some success right now.The veteran signed a three-year, $72.5 million contract with the Raiders last spring, but lost his starting job to rookie Aiden O’Connell midway through his rookie season.
O’Connell will likely take center stage in Las Vegas again in 2024, and even if he doesn’t, the Raiders won’t bring Garoppolo back. “You never know,” Garoppolo said when asked if he’ll compete for the starting spot with the Raiders next season (via ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez ).
The 32-year-old caught a pass in the Raiders’ season finale. Before that, he hadn’t played since October. 30. In six games this year, Garoppolo has thrown for 1,205 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions, completing 65.1 percent of his passes and posting a 77.7 passer rating.
“Honestly, I just want to get back in the game,” Garoppolo said. “That’s why I play this game. … I like to win. Honestly, I think I came here to go out and win. As a football player, this is something you have to accept. Not everyone wants that. Some want stats and stuff like that. I really want to go out there and win. I enjoy doing it.
That’s why we’re here.”Chances are you won’t get that opportunity in Las Vegas.Cutting Garoppolo this offseason would cost the Raiders $28 million, but it might not stop them from doing so. Before joining Las Vegas, Jimmy Garoppolo spent the last six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, leading the club to a Super Bowl victory in 2019-20.
