Mental health continues to gain more attention across the country, especially among athletes who may or may not be struggling with mental illness. Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Nate Hobbs is one of the latest players to achieve this.
Hobbs recently spoke about mental illness at the Pearson Community Center. “No matter how well off you are, everyone, me and you, has something to do with the brain,” Hobbs said. “Some people cope with this situation more easily than others; some people really need help. If I could make that sound I would. “Being able to sit in front of many people and tell them what I want to do has made me strong, willing to let go and go out. My mother always told me, ‘Sometimes you do things that scare you.’ Hobbs’ mother, Denisa Hobbs, is a doctor. She explained that mental health has become a popular topic for her and Nate.
The Hobbs family has always been open to ideas and misunderstandings, Denisha said. “For us and our family, talking about feelings and being open and vulnerable is something we do all the time,” Denisa said. “I’m happy for Nathan because he loves people and the community. I’m happy for him because he doesn’t forget that some people can’t reach him, and he goes to them.” The Raiders linebacker explained that he didn’t expect to step onto the sport’s biggest stage playing for a team like the Raiders. He said faith and courage helped him get to this point in his career. “I cannot see far,” said Hobbes.
“Growing up, I saw the NFL on TV and that’s it. It’s not that I didn’t believe in myself; I just didn’t think I had the opportunity to see myself that way. So if you believe in yourself, do what you do. Be confident and courageous in everything, especially when it comes to mental illness and knowing yourself to be someone else.” See one side; the sky’s the limit.”
