The Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers battled for the NFC title game Saturday night in San Francisco. It was a great game that came down to a final and the 49ers won 24-21. But the Packers should have won this game. They are the 7th seed and the 49ers are the 1st seed, so San Francisco was the favorite, but the Packers had every opportunity to win every game and lost them all.
The Packers led the 49ers 21-14 entering the fourth quarter, at which point Green Bay missed two golden opportunities with a pair of easy interceptions. They also had a chance to turn the ball into a two-point play in 49ers territory, and Jordan Love made a pick. After the 49ers added a field goal to make it 21-17, Green Bay missed a field goal to make it 24-17.
That would have tied the game after San Francisco’s final shot. The opportunity was there and it was not taken. “The Green Bay Packers thought they beat the San Francisco 49ers in 58 minutes, but to beat a No. 1 … you have to play 60 minutes of football,” Rob Gronkowski said after the game. Rob Gronkowski is right.
In general, there is no doubt. On Saturday night, the Packers looked like the better team. But you can’t overlook a team as good as the 49ers, and that’s exactly what they did. Good teams make them pay, and the 49ers made the Packers pay.
