Liverpool boss Arne Slot has finally addressed the growing controversy surrounding Federico Chiesa’s absence from the club’s Champions League squad. The Italian winger, a high-profile signing, was expected to play a key role in Europe this season, but his name was surprisingly missing when the official list was released.
Speaking at a press conference, Slot clarified the reasoning behind the decision, explaining that it wasn’t down to lack of quality, but rather a combination of fitness concerns and squad balance. “Federico is a fantastic player and an important part of our project,” Slot stated. “But when you submit a Champions League squad, there are difficult choices to make. At this moment, we felt he wasn’t at 100% and the team needed different options.”

The announcement has sparked heated debate among supporters. Some fans believe Slot is right to prioritize fully fit players, while others argue that leaving out a world-class talent like Chiesa could cost Liverpool dearly in Europe.
For now, Chiesa will focus on domestic competitions and building back his sharpness. But with Liverpool aiming to go deep in the Champions League, all eyes will be on whether Slot’s bold decision proves wise—or becomes one of the season’s biggest talking points.
