Kimi Räikkönen was never the typical Formula 1 superstar.
The 2007 world champion became famous for his extraordinary speed, calm personality and refusal to say more than necessary. But behind that famously quiet image was a driver who could become extremely direct when something went wrong.
Over the years, Kimi produced some of the most memorable — and sometimes controversial — moments in Formula 1, from heated radio exchanges to clashes with rivals and disagreements with his own teams.
📻 “JUST LEAVE ME ALONE…”
Perhaps nothing represents Kimi better than his legendary radio message during the 2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
While fighting for victory with Lotus, his engineer was giving him information about the gap behind. Kimi responded with the now-famous message: “Just leave me alone, I know what I’m doing.”
Rather than becoming a distraction, the moment became part of F1 folklore.
Kimi went on to win the race, making the exchange even more memorable. Formula 1 itself later highlighted the message among his greatest radio moments.

🔥 THE LOTUS TEAM RADIO CLASH
Another particularly heated episode came during the 2013 Indian Grand Prix.
Kimi was involved in a tense situation with teammate Romain Grosjean while trying to manage the race. Lotus trackside operations director Alan Permane became increasingly frustrated over the radio and told Räikkönen to move aside.
Kimi responded forcefully, creating one of the most uncomfortable team-radio exchanges of his career.
The disagreement became bigger than a normal radio argument, with Lotus later issuing a public statement following the backlash surrounding the exchange.
😡 THE SERGIO PÉREZ INCIDENT
Kimi also had a memorable confrontation with Sergio Pérez during the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix.
After contact between the two drivers, Räikkönen was visibly furious over the radio. His comments about Pérez were considerably more aggressive than the calm image fans normally associated with him.
It was another example of what happened when Kimi felt a rival had crossed the line.
The incident became one of several famous examples of his blunt communication over team radio.

🏁 THE 2018 FERRARI TEAM-ORDERS DRAMA
One of the more serious controversies came during the 2018 German Grand Prix.
Räikkönen was running ahead of Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel when Ferrari communicated that he should not hold Vettel up. Kimi asked the team to make the instruction clearer before eventually allowing Vettel through.
After the race, Räikkönen explained that the team’s message had not initially been clear enough.
The situation attracted attention because Vettel was Ferrari’s championship contender that season, while Kimi was also fighting for his own result.
🚨 THE 2018 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX DISAGREEMENT
At Spa in 2018, Räikkönen’s frustration was directed toward his own Ferrari team’s handling of damage to his car.
Daniel Ricciardo made contact with Kimi at the start, damaging the Ferrari. Kimi subsequently questioned whether the rear-wing damage had been properly assessed.
Radio communications revealed that he repeatedly asked the team to check the problem, while Ferrari initially believed the damage was not structural.
The situation eventually became a talking point because the damage proved more significant than initially believed.
🧤 “GLOVES AND STEERING WHEEL!”
Then came one of the most entertaining Kimi moments of all.
During the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Kimi was being moved around after a red-flag interruption when he realized he did not have his gloves and steering wheel.
His increasingly frustrated radio messages demanding that the items be brought to him became another classic piece of Kimi footage.
It was not a major sporting controversy, but it perfectly demonstrated why his radio communications became so popular with fans.
🥤 THE FAMOUS DRINK-BOTTLE ARGUMENT
At the 2018 Hungarian Grand Prix, Kimi had another unforgettable conversation with Ferrari over his drinks system.
His engineer was trying to communicate with him about the drink bottle, while Kimi questioned what was happening.
The bizarre exchange quickly became one of the most replayed examples of Kimi’s deadpan communication style.
Once again, something that could have been an ordinary technical problem became a memorable F1 moment because of the way Kimi handled it.
🌧️ THE 2005 MONACO RADIO CONFUSION
Even before the famous Lotus years, Kimi had already experienced unusual radio drama.
During the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix, McLaren faced uncertainty over whether Räikkönen should pit. According to accounts of the incident, communication problems contributed to confusion over the decision.
Kimi eventually received the message too late to make the pit entry.
The episode became another example of how communication between driver and pit wall could have enormous consequences during a Grand Prix.

🏎️ THE “ICEMAN” WHO WASN’T ALWAYS ICE-COLD
These moments reveal an interesting contradiction about Räikkönen.
Away from the car, he was famously reserved. In the cockpit, however, he could be extremely direct when frustrated.
That contrast became a major part of his appeal.
His fans knew that if something went wrong — whether it involved another driver, a technical problem or a team instruction — they might hear an unforgettable message over the radio.
And unlike many drivers who carefully choose every word, Kimi often sounded as though he simply said exactly what he was thinking.
🏆 CONTROVERSY BECAME PART OF THE LEGACY
Despite the arguments and memorable incidents, Kimi’s career cannot be defined by controversy alone.
He won 21 Grands Prix, finished runner-up in the championship twice with McLaren, and eventually captured the 2007 world title with Ferrari. Formula 1’s official Hall of Fame describes his McLaren period as one in which he won nine races and finished second in the championship in both 2003 and 2005.
His controversial moments simply became part of a much larger story.
From the legendary “Leave me alone” message to the furious demands for his gloves and steering wheel, Kimi repeatedly gave Formula 1 something that modern motorsport rarely gets — completely authentic personality.
And perhaps that is why, years after his final Grand Prix, fans still remember not only Kimi Räikkönen the world champion, but also Kimi the character.
The Iceman may have rarely spoken — but when he did, Formula 1 listened. 🧊🏎️🔥
