The Denver Broncos held their season-ending press conference on Tuesday with team owner and CEO Greg Penner, head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton.
Penner was encouraged by the team’s progress for 2023, but understood the club was not meeting fans’ expectations. “First of all, I think we took a big step forward this year,” Penner said.
“What I saw gave me courage. I am very proud of the resilience shown by our players as well as the leadership of Sean, George and the entire staff. That being said, we understand the championship standards we have for the organization and the expectations of our fans. We are a proud franchise.
“We pride ourselves on a winning record, but this year we didn’t live up to expectations.”The Broncos went 8-9 in 2023, the club’s most wins in a season since 2016, but Denver failed to advance to the playoffs. The Broncos are on a losing streak and need a few more wins to advance in the postseason.
Thisleft fans disappointed with the 2023 campaign, which Penner acknowledged. “I want to make sure the fans understand that I understand their frustration,” Penner said. “The main message to Broncos nation is that we’re just as anxious to win here as you are.
We know we still have a lot of work to do to improve this season. I would like to thank my fans for their loyalty and support. “I think we have the best fans in the world,” he said. The bottom line is that the fans win.
Denver hasn’t had a winning season since 2016. If Penner wants to please the fans, the Broncos will have to bounce back to a winning season in Year 2 under Payton.
