According to former Scotland captain Stuart Hogg, attending a rehabilitation facility allowed him to “reset” following his arrest by the police for an incident in the Scottish Borders.
Scotland’s all-time top try scorer, Hogg, announced his retirement from the game in 2023, just before the Rugby World Cup began. During his stint in the game, he also played on three tours with the British and Irish Lions.
The 31-year-old, who had success as a player for the Exeter Chiefs and Glasgow Warriors, was taken into custody at a home in his birthplace of Hawick on February 25.
A representative for Police Scotland verified that Hogg had been charged and was freed with the agreement to appear at Jedburgh Sheriff Court later on, with a report to be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
Hogg wrote a heartfelt letter on social media on Sunday, describing his stay at the rehabilitation facility and his desire to “learn about myself and talk about how I felt, without being judged”.
Hogg stated: “I needed time away from the spotlight, guidance, and assistance because I was lost and couldn’t think clearly.”
“I have been incredibly worried about how I come across, what people think of me, how I would affect them, and how I would get through the day. It wasn’t healthy to live every minute in my brain.
“My stay at a rehabilitation facility gave me the opportunity to reflect, get to know myself, and express my feelings without fear of rejection.
“Although difficult, it was the correct course of action. Assuming responsibility was the first positive step. I own my mistakes and comprehend the reasons behind my actions.”
Hogg went on, “I’ve been greatly touched by things like internet harassment and private, personal concerns being exposed to the world. I’ve been unable to handle it. Abuse on the internet is unacceptable.
“Taking a break has given me the opportunity to view the world in a fresh light, express gratitude for what I already have, and—most importantly—be enthusiastic about the short-, medium-, and long-term goals that lie ahead of me.
“I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has reached out and shown love, friendship, and support. You have supported me during my lowest moments, and I am eager to embrace our future together.”
