
Tadej Pogačar’s extraordinary performances have once again placed the Slovenian superstar at the center of one of professional cycling’s most sensitive conversations: doping and the credibility of elite performances.
But before the rumors become headlines presented as facts, there is an important distinction to make.
There is a difference between suspicion, public debate and proven wrongdoing.
The latest discussion gained fresh momentum after Pogačar became one of the high-profile riders subjected to an unusual overnight anti-doping control during the 2026 Tour de France.
And the timing immediately caught people’s attention.
THE 5 A.M. KNOCK ON THE DOOR
During the Tour, Pogačar was unexpectedly awakened at around 5 a.m. by anti-doping officials from the International Testing Agency (ITA).
His closest rival at the time, Jonas Vingegaard, was tested even earlier—around 2 a.m.
The tests were conducted outside the normal testing hours, making the incident particularly unusual. Reports said the nighttime controls required special authorization, and a Paris judge had authorized the testing.
That detail quickly became a major talking point.
Why were the leading riders being tested in the middle of the night?

WHY NIGHTTIME TESTING EXISTS

Being selected for a doping test does not, by itself, mean that the rider has doped.
Elite cyclists are tested regularly, and testing is designed to determine whether an anti-doping violation has occurred.
SO WHY DID POGAČAR’S NAME BECOME PART OF THE DEBATE?
Pogačar is one of the most dominant figures in modern cycling.

The Athlete Biological Passport is different from simply looking for one particular banned substance. It monitors biological variables over time and can identify changes that may warrant further anti-doping action.
That means the bigger story was not simply “Pogačar was tested.”
The broader story was an intensified anti-doping operation involving numerous riders.
BUT SOCIAL MEDIA HAS A DIFFERENT STORY
This is where things become particularly interesting.
Whenever a superstar is subjected to an unusual test, social media can turn a relatively technical anti-doping procedure into something much more dramatic.
A nighttime test becomes:
“Why did they come for him at 5 a.m.?”
Then the question becomes:
“What did they suspect?”
And eventually, some posts can make the leap from suspicion to accusation without presenting evidence.
That is where caution becomes important.
The fact that anti-doping authorities considered nighttime testing necessary does not automatically establish that Pogačar was guilty of anything.
