Deal in ‘Advanced’ Stages
Multiple reputable sources suggest that the deal is now in its advanced stages, with only the final formalities and medical clearance remaining. While neither club has yet issued a public statement, internal confirmations and leaks to the media indicate that the player will join Newcastle on a season-long loan, which will automatically convert into a permanent transfer next summer.
The total package is expected to reach £67 million, making it one of the largest single-player investments in Newcastle’s modern era.
Who Is the Player?
While official names have been withheld pending confirmation, sources strongly point toward a move for Kalvin Phillips, who has struggled for consistent game time at the Etihad Stadium since joining from Leeds United in 2022. Pep Guardiola has publicly praised Phillips’ professionalism but admitted the player has not fit into his tactical plans.
Phillips had a short loan spell at West Ham during the second half of the 2023–24 season but is now ready for a more permanent role elsewhere.
Why Newcastle?
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been eager to strengthen the midfield, especially after injuries and inconsistent form impacted the club’s performance during the 2024–25 campaign. Phillips offers Premier League experience, England international pedigree, and the kind of tactical versatility Howe has long valued.
The loan with a mandatory buy clause structure is also strategic for Newcastle. Due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) constraints, deferring the bulk of the payment until the 2025–26 season allows the Magpies to remain compliant while significantly boosting the squad.
What This Means
If completed, this deal signals Newcastle’s continued ambition to cement their place in the Premier League’s top four. With Champions League football returning to St. James’ Park, a marquee signing like Phillips could be central to their long-term project.
The £67 million figure also reflects the rising cost of securing Premier League talent, especially when dealing with domestic rivals like Manchester City. The move could also serve as a fresh start for Phillips, who has the opportunity to become a midfield lynchpin for a club with big ambitions.
Final Details Pending
As of now, personal terms are reportedly agreed, and the medical is scheduled in the coming days. Should everything proceed without complications, an official announcement could be made by both clubs within the week.
