After the Baltimore Ravens suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, general manager Eric DeCosta faced the daunting task of rebuilding the roster to increase their competitiveness.
However, DeCosta finds himself limited by the team’s current salary cap and must make some difficult decisions regarding the roster. One such comment came from USA Today’s Ravens Wire writer Glenn Erby, who said the Ravens could capitalize on Marlon Humphrey’s talent “post-June 1.” Even though Humphrey is only 28 this season, it seems a bit radical to consider releasing him. Still, Erby cited a potential financial benefit: By releasing Humphrey after June 1, the Ravens would save $11.75 million in cap space while receiving $11.12 million in dead space.
According to OverTheCap, this offer would significantly increase the Ravens’ available cap space, which currently stands at $7.3 million. According to Spotrac, Humphrey currently ranks third on the team in rushing. While DeCosta could explore the option of renegotiating Humphrey’s contract, it must be acknowledged that this would only delay resolution of the problem. However, such discussion could lead to the Ravens making significant changes in the upcoming free agency period, which could facilitate further changes to the group’s promotion.
