Hiring Antonio Pierce as head coach was the Las Vegas Raiders’ biggest decision of the offseason, and one of his first big decisions as a coach will be what to do at quarterback.
Aidan O’Connell hasn’t performed well enough to warrant becoming the starting quarterback this season, and Jimmy Garoppolo is likely to be fired. The Raiders may not be able to select a top rookie as they don’t have a selection until the 13th pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Fortunately, we have several experienced pros available to help.
When asked which NFL quarterback he would like to play with, star wide receiver Davante Adams had an interesting answer.”I love Cousin Kirk,” Adams said on the Jan. 18 episode of Two G’s in a Pod. I think Kirk Cousins is a great quarterback. In terms of availability, Kirk looks like a capable player.Cousins’ contract with the Minnesota Vikings expires this season and he will become a free agent.
The Vikings could try to bring him back, but other teams should be interested. If the Raiders aren’t optimistic about their chances of selecting a quarterback in the draft, Cousins could be a good pick. But a team could select a rookie in the draft and let him develop behind the four-time Pro Bowler.
Kirk Cousins: Is he? The Raiders may not be too concerned about the selection of Davante Adams at quarterback, as they gave him what he wanted when they signed Antonio Pierce. However, Kirk Cousins has a solid resume. In seven of the last nine seasons, he has thrown for 4,000 yards and 24 touchdowns. His record as a starting pitcher is 76-67-2.
The offensive coordinator’s personality will determine his fit for the Raiders. If the team decides to take Kyle Shanahan protege Clint Kubiak for that position, Cousins would be a great fit. Shanahan’s offense is perfect for a quarterback like Kirk Cousins who is good in the pocket but doesn’t move much.
