Liverpool could not have produced a more emphatic victory over Burnley on Boxing Day as they returned to the top of the Premier League. The Reds opened the scoring through Darwin Nunez who scored with a perfect finish to the delight of his teammates and the Liverpool fans.
Jurgen Klopp’s men had to wait until the 90th minute to double their lead when the returning Diogo Jota fired a shot into the far corner of James Trafford’s goal. However, at full time, the scores may be different. Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott both saw goals disallowed against the Clarets and former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher gave a harsh assessment of the incident.
In Gakpo’s case, Burnley defender Charlie Taylor passed and handed the ball to Nunes, which led to Nunes attempting a free kick. According to Gallagher, Gakpo’s goal would have been disallowed by VAR had referee Paul Tierney not called for the foul.
