With Super Bowl LVIII about a month away, trouble could be brewing for the NFL.
Ahead of the Las Vegas Raiders’ season finale against the Denver Broncos, 9News found rough conditions on the field at Scotty Gange Allegiant Stadium in Denver, at least in the end zone. The $1.9 billion multi-purpose stadium opened in 2020 and features two arenas.
UNLV also plays its home games there and prefers to play on artificial turf, while the Raiders play on turf that receives sunlight and has an irrigation and drainage system. Packed with all the features you need to keep your game clean, it adds to the mystery of what any part of the pitch will look like as February 10 quickly approaches.
The league should be especially concerned because the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs complained about slippery conditions a year ago during Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. State Farm Stadium is similar to Allegiant Stadium, though ultimately due to too much water in the stadium.
Both have natural turf, so this year’s race could face the same problem. Given the problems the Raiders have had at home and in recent history, the NFL will have to be careful to make sure everything is in good shape for the playoffs this time around.
