Paul Merson has praised Dominic Solanke for overcoming his frustration at Liverpool. The striker was considered one of the jewels of Chelsea’s youth academy when he joined United in 2017.
Solanke struggled in his debut season, making just five starts in 21 league games and had to wait until the final day of the season to score his first goal for the club. He moved to Bournemouth for £19m in January 2019, but his lack of goals in the Premier League continued. The former England international scored a total of 44 goals in two seasons in the Championship and was a standout performer at the highest level at the age of 26.
Sky Sports pundit Merson Solanke has admitted his man of the season has so far missed out on Manchester City’s Erling Holland. The Bournemouth forward has scored at least 12 goals in 18 league games, while Haaland is the competition’s top scorer with 14 goals. “We had Solanke (but went for Haaland),” Merson told Sky Sports, explaining he would do the same with Solanke, as reported by HITC.
Haaland was brought in as the squad was selected after scoring a hat-trick against Nottingham Forest recently. “But before last week (hat-trick) I picked this (team of the season). I think it’s good. “I think he went to Liverpool a little early. It did not happen. I was behind the eight ball. I went to Bournemouth, and now that I think about it, I think it was really good. I think it was a threat.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he keeps doing what he’s doing and makes some moves.Solanke has scored five goals in his last three games and is the striker Liverpool thought they had signed six years ago. The goal tally is now level with Mohamed Salah’s, but the Egyptian has scored three more goals in all competitions.
