“They can’t do what you do,” says Serena Williams in support of Caitlin.
Serena Williams has spoken out in support of Caitlin Clark, stating she is delighted the Indiana Fever player avoids social media and commends the youngster for remaining grounded. Williams was speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York to mark the premiere of In the Arena: Serena Williams, a new eight-part documentary series.
“If people are negative, it’s because they can’t do what you do,” Williams stated. Clark was picked first overall by Indiana following a remarkable college career at Iowa. During her freshman season, she was subjected to numerous hard fouls and struggled. She was also left off the USA’s Olympic roster.
The decision not to take her to Paris has resulted in a large number of racist, sexist, and homophobic remarks online from people claiming to protect Clark, who is white, in a league where the majority of players are Black and many are LGBT. “People should not use my name to promote their goals. It is disappointing. “It’s not acceptable,” Clark stated last week. “… Treating every single woman in this league with the same amount of respect, I think, it’s just a basic human thing that everybody should do.” Clark has openly stated that she tries to avoid social media owing to the pressures of being in the national limelight at such a young age.
“Honestly, I feel like I talk to the media more than I get to talk to my own family, which is – No, I’m being dead serious – which is really kind of sad in a way,” Clark stated in May. “It is a lot for a 22-year-old. It might be challenging at times. “Getting off social media has been the healthiest thing.” Clark has continually tried to remove herself from off-court incidents, claiming that her primary emphasis is on basketball. However, she has been chastised for not using her platform to speak out on issues and for avoiding sensitive themes. Williams acknowledged Clark’s demands and stated that she also avoids social media.
