Serena Williams oozes confidence on the tennis court, but the 39-year-old didn’t always feel at ease in her own skin. In a new interview with British Vogue, the tennis pro admits that she frequently felt as if her older sister, Venus Williams, 40, fit more readily into society’s beauty standards.
“When I was growing up, what was celebrated was different,” Serena Williams told the magazine. “Venus looked more like what is truly acceptable: she has tremendously long legs and is extremely slim. I didn’t see anyone on TV who looked like me or were thick. There wasn’t a favorable body image. It was a different age.”
