Raiders soon will be top five in salary cap
On June 1, the Las Vegas Raiders will be rewarded with an extra $24 million following the departure of former quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. Their salary cap currently sits at $17 million according to Spotrac and ranks at 15 in the NFL. Garoppolo was released following an underwhelming season filled with many turnovers. After being released by Las Vegas on the first day of the new 2024 season, Garoppolo eventually signed with the Los Angeles Rams. He has signed a one-year deal and will likely be the second-string quarterback behind Matthew Stafford.
Salary Cap Spending
Dead cap for the Raiders affects the salary cap greatly as there were many former contracts that still limit the money that can be spent now. Chandler Jones and Hunter Renfrow will not be playing for Vegas but equate to over $17 million.
In free agency, Raiders made large splashes early on with Christian Wilkins and Gardner Minshew. Wilkins signed a contract that emitted a $10.3 million cap hit. Minshew signed a contract that affected the salary cap worth $8 million.
Contract Extensions
Expect the Raiders to spend a large sum of the newly added funds towards extensions to players with expiring contracts. Malcolm Koonce, Marcus Epps, and Robert Spillane are a couple of players who will need to be extended for next season.
A player could be signed from free agency if money is still lingering from contract extensions. June 1 and June 2 will be important days for transactions before training camp returns on June 3.
