Liverpool won two months of Premier League honors in January; Diogo Jota and Jurgen Klopp were named Player of the Month and Coach of the Month respectively. Liverpool played just three top-flight matches last month due to FA Cup commitments and the winter break, but Jurgen Klopp’s side retained their top spot with a good nine points.
Liverpool scored four goals against Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Chelsea in January to make it 12 goals in three games, but have only conceded 10 goals by series standard. Our mission has been recognized. Jota has had a direct hand in goal in every game and now the winger is known for this ability, winning his first Premier League Player of the Month award and scoring in all of last month, scoring three goals and two assists.
Jota scored for Curtis Jones to beat Newcastle on New Year’s Day and then won a controversial penalty at the death which Mohamed Salah converted. After taking advantage of Salah’s injury and Africa Cup of Nations duty, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers forward scored twice in a 4-0 win over Bournemouth on January 21, including a goal from Darwin Nunez.
Ten days later, the 27-year-old scored again in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Chelsea, slipping past the Blues defense and luckily finding the back of the net before scoring the first goal of the match. Jota beat teammate Conor Bradley to win January’s award, while Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes, Luton Town’s Ely Adebayor and Tottenham Hotspur’s Richarlison were also nominated.
Jota became the Premier League Player of the Month for the first time in his career, becoming the second Liverpool player to win this award in the 2023-24 season, after Salah won the award in October. The striker also became the first Portuguese player to win the award since Cristiano Ronaldo in April 2022 and the first since Deco for Chelsea in August 2008. Two Portuguese players who do not play for Manchester United.
