Roy Keane criticized Liverpool’s performance in Sunday’s defeat to Arsenal, saying the club defended “like a pub team” at the Emirates Stadium.
Jurgen Klopp’s side lost their second Premier League game of the season in north London last weekend, taking their title race to a heavy defeat at the hands of Arsenal. Liverpool lost 3-1 after a series of embarrassing defensive errors, with the forwards struggling to create too many openings.
Virgil van Dijk had a poor performance and was responsible for all three of Manchester United’s goals, while Alisson also performed surprisingly poorly and Ibrahima Konate was ruled out for the evening. This afternoon was one to forget for Manchester United’s game down south and former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane gave a scathing review of Liverpool’s performance on Sunday.Reflecting on Liverpool’s first goal, Keane said: “Surely he (Van Dijk) scored the wrong goal?
“You have to touch the ball or pull it in some way to get there and it will be no man’s land. I think it’s a very poor defense. “He’s a very experienced player who sells himself like that.”Keane added: “I can’t believe how bad Liverpool were from the first whistle to the last whistle, whether they were in possession or not. “Thanks again to Arsenal, they came and stayed busy but Liverpool’s defence, the goals conceded… it’s like a pub team defending.”It’s hard to disagree with Keane’s post-match comments. This is because long-legged Liverpool have dropped to two points off the lead.
Had the Reds beaten Arsenal, they would have moved eight points clear of the Gunners.Manchester City also have two games against Klopp’s men and a win in both will see them climb the table. The first game is against Brentford on Monday night and Liverpool could do Wasps an unexpected favor.United’s brutal schedule seemed to catch up with the players this weekend and will hopefully put a damper on Klopp’s successful finals season.
