The Detroit Lions may have just clinched the NFC North division title, but former NFL wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald still isn’t buying it.On the Let’s Go podcast with Tom Brady and Jim Gray this week, Fitzgerald expressed his doubts about the Lions. “Now you could say they’re the Grinch, but for a team that hasn’t won a division title since 1993, it’s hard to take them seriously,” Fitzgerald said.
“It took a long time. Yeah, they’re playing really well, but they’re the Detroit Lions.” Not only did Detroit win their division, but they also have the best record in the NFC at 11-4, giving them a chance to secure the No. 1 seed and playoff seeding. Enjoy home court advantage.”It’s hard to predict what they can do in the playoffs,” Fitzgerald added.
“You want to see them have a great game against the Cowboys. “It’s a good test before we go into the playoffs.”The Lions have made the playoffs three times since 2000 and haven’t won a playoff game since the 1991-92 season, so Fitzgerald’s concerns are understandable. But this is just another baseball club in Detroit, so it’s unfair to compare this version of the Lions to the team from decades ago.
Fitzgerald also played for the Arizona Cardinals, a franchise that was considered a laughingstock when he arrived. When he was drafted in 2004, the Cardinals were making their first postseason appearance since 1983 when they made the trip in 1998. Fitzgerald helped lead Arizona back to the playoffs in the 2008-09 campaign when the Cards reached the Super Bowl.
With that in mind, it seems unfair for Larry Fitzgerald to simply ignore the Lions. Detroit is scheduled to face the Dallas Cowboys in Texas on Sunday before returning home to play the Minnesota Vikings to close out the regular season on January 7. We’ll see if the Lions can prove Fitzgerald (and others) wrong between now and February.
