The biggest story from Thursday’s Philadelphia Eagles–Dallas Cowboys matchup wasn’t the nail-biting finish or even the weather delay — it was Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter.
Right after the opening kickoff, Carter was ejected for spitting at Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. It was a costly mistake that weakened the Eagles, though they still managed to edge out Dallas with a 24–20 victory.
As the game went on, clips and reports surfaced giving more context to the incident, but none of it worked in Carter’s favor.
Here’s how it unfolded: following the kickoff, Eagles fullback Ben VanSumeren injured his knee, leading to a brief stoppage. While players waited on the field, Prescott spat on the ground near where Carter was standing. Believing the action was aimed at him, Carter confronted Prescott, and after some words were exchanged, he spit back. Officials immediately flagged the act and ejected Carter.
Prescott later clarified that spitting was just part of his routine and not directed at Carter. Carter, speaking to the media afterward, admitted fault, apologized to teammates and fans, and promised it wouldn’t happen again.
Though the incident reflects poorly on Carter, the Eagles escaped with a win. Still, the NFL is expected to review the matter and could issue a fine or suspension. If discipline extends to missed games, the situation could become much bigger, but for now, Philadelphia will handle Carter’s lack of discipline internally while celebrating their 1-0 start.
