Two weeks ago, Los Angeles Rams coach Nick Keighley took over as offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, succeeding Bill O’Brien.
But four days ago, the team broke the deal between New England and Caley by hiring former quarterbacks and running backs coach Alex Van Pelt for the position. It seemed possible at one point that Caley would join the Pats, but Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal suggested the Patriots hire Caley because many teams hired Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as head coach. “Everyone else had options, including Nick Keighley, who for some time seemed the frontrunner,” Bedard wrote. “Did he ask for more money than Bill O’Brien to make sure Sean McVay’s staff and family can have fun in Los Angeles?”
“There was a lot of buzz at the Senior Bowl.”Kayley has received interest from teams other than the Patriots in need of an offensive coordinator, including interviews with the New York Jets and Houston Texans last season, but has reportedly not interviewed with any other teams this year. He previously spent eight seasons as an offensive assistant with the Patriots from 2015 to 2022 and was the quarterbacks/defensive backs coach before joining the Rams last season. With former quarterbacks coach/passing coordinator Zach Robinson now the offensive coordinator for Raheem Morris and the Atlanta Falcons, Caley could take on more responsibility for the Rams’ offense, possibly moving into Robinson’s former position.
