Former NBA first-round pick Tony Snell was on top of the NBA world this week when it was revealed Friday night that Snell will have to be on a team’s roster to qualify for the league’s health plan.
By making the roster, Snell will have served 10 years in the NBA and is automatically eligible for Players Association retirement benefits with health insurance coverage. On Friday morning, Denver Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon took to social media to plead with NBA teams to sign Snell.As the clock ticked down on Friday, it looked like no NBA would listen to Aaron Gordon’s pleas. The same goes for his Nuggets.
Tony Snell currently plays for the Maine Celtics of the NBA G League. Snell spent the last two seasons with the Maine Celtics after spending nine years in the NBA.Snell last played in the NBA during the 2021-22 season, splitting time with the Portland Trail Blazers and New Orleans Pelicans. He was part of the deal that put CJ McCollum on the Pelicans roster.
That season, Snell averaged 3.5 points per game, 40.4% shooting from the field, 35.2% from three-point range and 100% from free throws and 1.9 rebounds. In addition to Portland and the Pelicans, Snell, who was selected 20th overall in the 2013 NBA draft, has also played for the Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks.
