RB Christian McCaffrey should be NFL MVP, says 49ers QB Brock Purdy: and#039;He does everything for us, and #039
In the ever-changing MVP debate for the 2023 season, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy voted over teammate Christian McCaffrey.
andquot;I think Christian should be the MVP,andquot; Purdy said next Sunday in a 45-29 win over Arizona, according to ESPN. andquot;I really believe that. He does everything for us… and so that’s the MVP in my eyes.andquot;
McCaffrey played at an MVP level Sunday, racking up a season-high 187 yards (115 rushing, 72 receiving) and three touchdowns.
Week 15 was McCaffrey’s 11th game of 2023 with over 100 yards (tied Roger Craig for most in a season in 49ers history). His 15th career game with 1-plus rushing TD and 1-plus receiving TD tied Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk for the most such games in NFL history.
Additionally, McCaffrey became the fourth player in NFL history to have four career seasons with over 1,000 passing yards and over 500 receiving yards, joining Marshall Faulk, Thurman Thomas and Tiki Barber.
McCaffrey, who has 1,801 rushing yards and 20 scrimmage TDs in 2023, also joined HOFers LaDainian Tomlinson and Emmitt Smith as the only players in NFL history with 1,800 13+ yards and scrimmage yards.
In two tilts against the Cardinals, McCaffrey scored seven touchdowns (four in Week 4 and three in Week 15), tied for the most against a single opponent in a season in the Super Bowl era (only Billy Cannon and #039;s ). 8 TD 1961 vs. New York Titans are the best ever).
A matchup nightmare for the 49ers offense to continue. McCaffrey certainly deserves his credit, as does Purdy, who threw four touchdowns Sunday and had his 13th game with a 100-plus passer rating, breaking a tie with Dan Marino, Tony Romo and Dak.
Prescott (both 12) had the third game with a 100-plus passer rating in QBand#039’s first 20 career starts since 1950, trailing only Patrick Mahomes (16) and HOF Kurt Warner (14) in 19 starts. andquot;We have the best quarterback in the NFL, so I think it’s his right to be considered for MVP,andquot; offensive tackle Trent Williams said. andquot;
And the same with Brock. Brock played his butt. … I couldn’t be more proud of both of those boys … and I mean, who cares if we can bring that (Lombard) trophy back to Santa Clara.
That and I’m worried.andquot; Having two MVP candidates will likely split some of the votes when the time comes, but for the 49ers, it highlights an explosive offense that has been tearing apart defenses since losing three games to start the season.
During the five-game winning streak, the club of head coach Kyle Shanahanand#039; averaged 34.5 points per game behind the performances of CMCand#039; and Purdyand. andquot;Thank God, I don’t have to change anything,andquot; Shanahan said.
andquot;But Iand#039;s probably won a couple of MVPs in his career and…that’s the most obvious one to me. I might be biased being on their team, but I don’t think so.andquot;
