Mark Clattenburg has criticized referee Anthony Taylor for his different reactions to similar penalty incidents involving Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
A former Premier League official pointed out that Liverpool were awarded a penalty last month when Diogo Jota was brought down by Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka, but Nottingham Forest were also denied a penalty in a similar situation. Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo rejected Taylor’s penalty appeal and was furious when VAR failed to overturn his decision.Clattenburg, who was a Premier League referee until 2017, believes Forest have a stronger case than Liverpool.
He wrote in his Daily Mail column: “Liverpool were awarded a penalty at Anfield last month when Diogo Iotta was adjudged to have been tripped by Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka. Decisions, however mild, were made in real time. Do they judge that day? Anthony Taylor had a penalty denied for Nottingham Forest after Taiwo Awoniyi was tripped by the left keeper. “It was 2-2 and Forest coach Nuno Espirito Santo was right when he said it was game time. Avonini had more to do than Jota.
Dubravka raised his right hand to hold him, but Orman still had nothing to gain.”VAR Tony Harrington cannot escape criticism for not allowing his teammate to correct his mistake,” Clattenberg said, adding that “VAR is also to blame for not intervening.””It will come as no surprise to Forest fans that these are different rules to those of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.”
