Heading into the 2023 season, people weren’t expecting much from the Green Bay Packers. They made the bold decision to acquire future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, trade him to the New York Jets and launch a youth movement. The Packers were the youngest team in the NFL.
Jordan Love, a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, became the team’s starting quarterback after appearing in 10 games and one start over three seasons. He was surrounded by supporting actors with less experience than him. No wide receiver on the active roster had more than one season of NFL experience. Because they were all freshmen and students. The same goes for other players, except for Josiah Deguara, a senior politician entering his fourth year. Despite the offensive inexperience, the unit really started to rock in the second half of the season.
Love looks like a solid starting point in this league and will only get better as players gain experience and skill positions improve. His development was of utmost importance to the Packers in 2023. He showed plenty and even gained valuable experience in the playoffs, leading the team to a win over the Dallas Cowboys before losing to the San Francisco 49ers.This is a team that deserves more attention going forward and is a team that shows an upward trend.
How high is the ceiling for this Packers team?
As ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said, there are those who believe they have a Super Bowl opportunity and will hoist the Lombardi Trophy after the 2024 season. “Yes, people go there. Jordan Love was a legitimate franchise quarterback, and the skill positions were filled with first- and second-year players. [Green Bay] has a young core and the offensive line played really well,” the veteran AFC scout said.
“The defense was poor, but we finished the year much better. They have always been talented on the left side of the ball. Can we be consistent?” Fowler wrote. That was certainly a bold prediction from an AFC scout who spoke with Fowler. The Packers are certainly right when they say they are on the right track. People questioned the decision to let Rodgers go, but it appears to have been the right decision.
They are in good shape for 2023 and their future looks very bright. If they can help their defense, they will be a dangerous team. There’s plenty of talent to work with on that side of the ball, as replacing defensive coordinator Joe Barry could be the biggest decision Green Bay will make this offseason.
