A live performance report from Sisters of Mercy….
The Sisters of Mercy always make their tours exciting events in and of themselves, and this one is no exception. The Sisters’ most recent performance in the United Kingdom took place at the Roundhouse in 2021. But ever since, it appears that they have been traveling the world almost nonstop. Not surprisingly, the faithful turn out in large numbers when they appear in London.
The Virginmarys, tonight’s support act, have forty minutes to win over some new admirers. Originally a three-piece, the Macclesfield-based group has steadfastly stuck to its two-piece lineup since the loss of bassist Matt Rose in 2016 and the hiring of touring bassist Ross Massey, who served as Matt’s successor. Danny Dolan plays drums, and Ally Dickaty provides vocals and guitar.
Classic 1960s soul music is played over the PA before to their onstage debut, which does not at all prepare the audience for the fury that is about to ensue! I have to admit that I had some reservations about them being as excellent as a two piece. But I did not have to worry. They still have a somewhat raw sound. Danny Dolan’s equipment includes what appears to be a ship’s bell. I initially assumed that this would be some sort of award, however it appears that it is not as it is used quite a bit!
