In Basic Instinct, Stone plays bisexual thriller writer Catherine Trammell, who has a romance with the detective working the case and ends up being the primary suspect in a murder. In 1992, director Paul Verhoeven informed The New York Times that he had to remove “35 to 40 seconds” from the movie’s theatrical run in order to keep it from receiving an NC-17 rating. However, he only removed a small portion of the film’s numerous sex scenes from the run. The scene where Stone uncrosses her legs while wearing a skirt and no underwear during Catherine’s interrogation—the scene that Stone claims she was assured wouldn’t be seen on screen—was included in the finished version.
For a number of years, Stone has said that Verhoeven and other crew members informed her that her privates weren’t being recorded in that sequence.
