Doyel built a case for Rose’s reinstatement.
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred rejected Pete Rose’s petition for reinstatement on Monday, citing his persistent gambling and evidence that he bet on games while playing for the Cincinnati Reds. In a letter to Rose that was made public, Manfred stated that baseball’s hits king had not been totally honest about his wagering on games. Manfred also stated that Rose continues to wager on baseball lawfully, despite the fact that his gambling got him in trouble.
Here’s a column Gregg Doyel penned in September advocating for reinstatement: Pete Rose was banned from baseball in 1989, and because life is black and white, choices are never reviewed, that was the end of it. Sorry, Pete. What has been done can’t be undone. What God has brought together cannot be ripped apart.
