Jayson Tatum, the franchise face of the Boston Celtics, disclosed some unexpected misgivings he had prior to moving to Beantown after becoming the team’s youngest player to collect 10,000 points this week.
Jayson Tatum has transformed from a talented lottery pick to a genuine superstar in the league during his first seven seasons in Boston. From averaging little over 13 points per game in his debut year to an MVP candidate who has averaged over 30 points per game over the last two seasons, his climb has been steady.
Because of his ascent and consistency, he has earned a unique place in the legendary history of the Boston Celtics team. The 25-year-old made team history on Saturday by becoming the youngest player to reach 10,000 points in his career. nearly a full year ahead of Antoine Walker, the previous record holder.
“It’s insane to even consider ten thousand points,” Tatum remarked following his team’s 124-114 triumph over the Brooklyn Nets. “I always remember telling my mom when I was younger that I wanted to play in the NBA. Even though I always believed I would be among the top players, it feels unreal to succeed.
With 10,016 points, Tatum ranks 14th all-time for the Celtics, and it’s possible that he still has ten more years of elite basketball left in him. But when he first joined the league in 2017, he had reservations about his ability to succeed to this extent in Boston.
After the victory, Tatum further stated that he wasn’t sure he could live up to the standard the club had begun to set after winning back-to-back seasons prior to his selection in the draft eight years earlier.
“Dude, I had no idea I was getting drafted,” he remarked. “I didn’t even want to come because I didn’t think I would play,” the first player said. I didn’t feel I was good enough to be on that team since they had Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Isaiah Thomas, and Gordon Hayward. Thus, I never gave thought to how to end a game or close one. Simply put, I was more focused on entering the game and getting going.
Tatum has obviously overcame those initial worries and is already a four-time All-Star, with a fifth trip expected this season.
