Ime Udoka, the coach of the Boston Celtics, “coached his last game in…
Ime Udoka’s season-long suspension caused some early on-court drama for the Celtics, but things are good in Boston these days. The C’s are on a seven-game winning streak and just keep winning against teams. The NBA’s top offense is currently being led by Interim C’s coach Joe Mazzulla, as things are going well.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, “everything is aligned and in place” for Mazzulla to lead the Celtics in the long run. For the 34-year-old, who has risen to the position of NBA head coach extremely quickly, that is a huge lift. Wojnarowski, of course, also mentioned the Udoka element.
According to Wojnarowski, “Ime Udoka is still officially the head coach of the Boston Celtics on suspension.” However, he has effectively coached his final game in Boston. This is unfamiliar ground.
Because of his infractions against team policies, which included having an inappropriate workplace connection, Udoka was suspended for the whole 2022–2023 season. Additionally, according to ESPN, Udoka spoke to a female employee using “crude language” before they started dating. Only a few days before the Celtics started training camp, Udoka’s misconduct was looked into, leading to the ban.
But, a few weeks into the season, Udoka came dangerously close to receiving his next coaching opportunity. Following their split from Steve Nash, the Nets were reportedly planning to appoint Udoka as their next head coach. However, the Nets decided against hiring Udoka in the midst of the Kyrie Irving scandal, which has already caused a great deal of disruption in Brooklyn. However, the C’s waived their right to pay should the hiring proceed, allowing the Nets to speak with Udoka during the recruiting process.
Udoka remains a member of the Celtics for the time being. He retained several of the assistant coaches he brought on board for the previous campaign, including a sizable Portland contingent. But with Mazzulla still leading the Celtics, it appears that his time in Boston is running out.
