Another familiar name joins the Patriots staff in Jerod Mayo. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that New England will hire Ben McAdoo as an offensive assistant.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, who first reported the Patriots’ interest, confirmed a deal had been reached. McAdoo will play a key role in the offense this season alongside new OC Alex Van Pelt, who joined New England State after a four-year career with the Browns. He and McAdoo were previously paired in Green Bay, and now the two will work together with the Patriots.
The latter resigned in 2023 after just one year as the Panthers’ offensive coordinator. The campaign marked the end of Matt Rhule’s tenure as head coach, and McAdoo is not tied to any OC hires in the 2023 recruiting cycle. However, the 46-year-old has experience in a variety of roles after his time with the Giants , including assistant titles and positions. McAdoo served as New York’s CO from 2014 to 2015 and was named the team’s head coach for the next two seasons. After an 11-5 record, they continued their mid-season streak with a 2-10 record in 2017.
McAdoo spent a year as a consultant with the Cowboys after assuming the role of QB coach with the Jaguars in 2020. That time prepared him for the Carolina OC opportunity, but it wouldn’t be surprising if his next NFL gig isn’t at the coordinator level . Van Pelt hasn’t called for any plays under Kevin Stefanski, so pairing him with an experienced offensive mind in McAdoo makes sense for the Patriots. New England is looking to take significant steps forward on offense in 2024, possibly with a new face under center. McAdoo has a reputation for evaluating QB prospects, and the Patriots are investing heavily in exploring the position with the no. 3 in the April draft.
Adding a signal caller alongside the team’s top two prospects (Caleb Williams and Drake Maye) isn’t set in stone at that point, but McAdoo will now be part of the staff making decisions about it. Achieve Many questions remain about Mayo’s status as a rookie head coach and the state of the Patriots’ roster. But his staff continues to evolve, and McAdoo continues to bring in outside coaches to pair with internal candidates promoted to new roles. The next opportunity to rebuild his stock comes with a transition team in New England.
