Although he might still sign a deal, the Spaniard is now free to join for any club as of Saturday after being allowed to negotiate pre-contract terms with foreign suitors in January.
De Gea signed a record-breaking contract in 2019 that paid him £375,000 per week, and United has been pressing him to accept a significant wage cut.
De Gea’s deal would still place him among the best goalkeepers even at a scaled-down level, and it is tough to imagine him maintaining such standards.
It is understood that preliminary talks have been held with highly regarded Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana of Inter Milan. Ten Hag is on a tight budget, though, and before making a bid for 27-year-old Onana, they would need to sell since they have already agreed to pay Mason Mount from Chelsea £55 million and United are looking for a center-forward.
