Jordan Henderson, the captain of Liverpool, has spoken out amid rumors that he may move to Saudi Arabia.
Although Henderson, 33, still has two years left on his Anfield contract, his future is uncertain.
Following the summer arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig, he now has more competition for a spot in Jurgen Klopp’s starting lineup.
Romeo Lavia of Southampton is one more midfielder with whom Liverpool is reportedly linked, raising the possibility that Henderson will be traded this summer.
One club reportedly interested in the England international is Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq, who recently appointed former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as their new head coach.
According to 90 min, Gerrard is keen to bring Henderson and another of his former Liverpool teammates Philippe Coutinho to Saudi Arabia.
Gerrard has been promised ‘huge’ funds in order to rebuild an Al Ettifaq side which finished seventh last season.
Even if he were offered the enormous salaries on offer in the Gulf country, it is unknown whether Henderson would think about joining the Saudi Pro League.
Prior to the World Cup, the England international criticized neighboring Qatar for its human rights record, while Amnesty International accused Saudi Arabia of committing comparable human rights breaches.
Henderson played 41 times in all competitions for Liverpool last season, and despite his advanced age, he was a key player for the Reds.
The former Sunderland midfielder has now broken his silence over his future and appears determined to remain with Liverpool.
On Tuesday evening, he took to Instagram to post images of himself preparing for the new season with an individual training session, alongside the caption: “Don’t dream of winning. Train for it!”
Liverpool players will start to return to the club on Saturday to officially begin pre-season training.
Henderson will be one of the last to return after the summer break due to his involvement in England’s Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Malta and North Macedonia in June.
However, he is expected to be part of the squad that travels to the Black Forest to face Bundesliga 2 clubs Karlsruher SC and Greuther Furth, with the first pre-season friendly taking place on July 19.
