According to former Reds attacker Stan Collymore, Liverpool should think about signing Marcel Sabitzer this summer. He was formerly on loan from Manchester United.
Sabitzer, who spent last season on loan at United from Bayern Munich, had a mixed record at Old Trafford.
For Erik ten Hag’s team, the Austrian international made 18 appearances across all leagues, scoring three goals. In the 2-2 tie with Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinal in March, he scored twice.
Between March and April, he played regularly for the team, and there were rumors that United might attempt to sign the 29-year-old on a permanent basis in the summer.
But he suffered a knee injury in April that ruled him out for the rest of the season. Sabitzer’s loan deal expired on June 30, and he has now returned to Bayern.
Tribal Football report that the German giants have placed the midfielder on the transfer list – and Collymore believes Liverpool should plot a swoop to seal his signing.
Liverpool told to sign Sabitzer this summer
Collymore, who scored 28 goals in 64 appearances for the Reds between 1995 and 1997, has advised his former club to get in ahead of United to sign Sabitzer, who reportedly has an asking price of between €15-€17 million.
Speaking in an interview with CaughtOffside, he explained: “There have been recent reports that the Bavarians are happy for [Sabitzer] to leave permanently for a fee of just €15 million – if that is true, I cannot believe United haven’t snapped their hand off already.
“If they’re not going to take Bayern Munich up on it, I wonder if [Jurgen] Klopp will think about it.
“He’s proven he can play in the Premier League and that fee is almost too good to turn down, especially when it’s senior international-level midfielders you’re in the market for!”
Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have already signed contracts with the Reds this summer, moving from Brighton and RB Leipzig, respectively.
They are also interested in Manu Kone of Borussia Monchengladbach, Nice’s Khephren Thuram, and Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.
While Sabitzer, like Lavia, has Premier League experience, Klopp’s team may decide against signing the Austrian due to his recent injury and other choices.
